Which Direction The Entrance Gates Should Be Open?
Coming with compound gates subject, take for example East Gate. (Below content is in view of opening the gates from the home, not from the outside)
For East direction homes, for the East Gate, the pivot/axle has to come to the South portion, so the gate has to come like East to West direction when opening to inside.
If we stand outside of the home then it seems to be gate is going inside when opening that is West direction, for more info you may check this image, in this image we can observe the gate from outside and the gate is opening from East to West direction, in this image the pivot point is also clearly shown and its towards South portion of the gate pillar.
Previously every one has their own home and has their compound wall and compound gates. Nowadays flats came into existence. For North direction home, for the North gate, the Pivot has to be fixed to West portion of the compound wall pillar and it has to come from North to South when opening from inside of the home.
For instance, if there is two gates instead of a single gate, then the pivot will be two. No confusion here. Both gates will be open to inside the home only, whether its East direction home or West direction home.

I have consulted Suresh Garu during December 2014 during the process of buying a house in Texas, USA.
