Togo Country Information
Togo is a country nestling along the Bight of Benin, in the Gulf Of Guinea, facing the North Atlantic ocean on the west coast of Africa. To be exact, it is situated between the latitude of 8 0 to the north and longitude of 10 10’ east. It shares the border with three countries: namely Benin in the east ( 644 Km or 400 miles ), Burkina Faso in the North ( 126 Km or 78 miles ) and Ghana ( 877 km or 545 miles ).
It all began in 1884, when the German Empire, in the scramble for Africa, established a colony, based on the SLAVE COAST, inclusive of the main cities of LOME, SEBE and ANEHO, which later became to be a new nation named Togoland.
This followed talks with King MLAPA III regarding control of the coastland by Germany’s Commissioner for West Africa, GUSTAV NACHTIGALL, who initiated the annex of both Togoland and KAMERUN, and made it into a protectorate.
France who had gained control over the next door Benin during the Scramble for Africa, acknowledged the rule of Germany in this region in 1885 on the 24 th of December.
Togo land became the model asset of Germany, as by 1905 a railway line, the first of its kind in the country, had been constructed between Lome and Aneho , and with the well distributed roadways, it had soon achieved the status of a self supporting colony. The CZECHOSLOVAKIA, a freshly created country following the 1st world war, also eyed this colony but without any success.
During the second world war, on August 8th, 1914, the French and British, stormed the country with Germany accepting defeat on the 26th August 1914. In 1916, Togoland was divided into 2 administrative divisions between France and the United kingdom.
After the war, The League of Nations officially sanctioned the division of the country through a mandate.
Lome, the capital city, which was initially in the British territory was transferred to the French section on the 1st October, 1920. After the war, the country s’ status as a mandate became a UN Trust territory jointly administered by the France and the United kingdom.
In December 1956, with the emergence of Ghana as an independent nation, western Togo who had been administratively a part of the BRITISH GOLD COAST, opted to merge with Gold Coast in the creation of the new nation.
In 1946, a Representative Assembly Elections was held, which was contested by 2 parties: The Committee of Togolese Unity (CUT ) led by Sylvanus Olympia and the Togolese Party of Progress ( PTP ).
With CUT winning handsomely, its leader became the Council leader. However, CUT was defeated in the 1951 Representative Assembly elections and the 1952 Territorial Assembly elections , which led the CUT to boycott future elections held under the auspices of the French, claiming there was a bias towards PTP.
The French section of Togoland was elevated as an Autonomous Republic within the French Union in 1955. The status quo remained the same with regards to its UN Trust territory status. The June 13 th, 1955 Territorial Assembly elections gave rise to an elected parliament, headed by a Prime Minister answerable to these elected representatives, with increased decentralization of power. The elections were not attended by the CUT.
A referendum carried out in 1956 upheld these changes which were incorporated in the constitution. NICHOLAS GRUNITZKY became the Prime Minister of the new republic on the 10th of September 1956.
In 1958, on the 27th of April, the first parliamentary elections under the UN supervision was held with Universal Suffrage for the people of Togo. This election was held because the UN acknowledged that the dividing of the country had not been carried out properly. As the leader of the wining party CUT, SYLVANUS OLYMPIA became the Prime Minister.
The United Nations on 14th November 1958 made it public that French Togo would gain independence, as an outcome of the declaration by the French, on the 13th October 1958, that they are ready to grant full independence.
The UN General Assembly also decided that once Togo became independent, the agreement with France, where Cameron who had the status of a UN Trust territory would also become void.
The people celebrated the birth of the fully independent nation of Togo on the 27th April 1960: and with that, the nation was freed of the shackles of authority with France and the UN. Thus Olympia became the President of this nation and ruled under a provisional constitution.
Food and cash crop cultivation under subsistence agriculture is the main source of people of Togoland. This sector is responsible for approximately 42 % of the gross domestic product ( GDP ). As a country, its imports amounted to 1,492 billion US $ in 2012.
The main items imported consisted of machinery and equipment, foodstuff, and petroleum products, while the export of cotton, phosphate, coffee, and cocoa earned them 893.8 million US $ in the same year.
Togo land has a 56 Km ( 35 miles ) coastline on the west, which is famed for its palm-fringed beaches. The country is equally famous for mountainous villages.
When you visit the country you would see traditional homesteads, fortress like clay huts, dating back to the 17th century, inhabited by the Batammariba people at Koutammakou. On the other hand Lome, the capital is imposing with the multistory Grand Marche bazaar and the Fetish market , where relic mounts would find common amulets and solutions relating to Vodun (voodoo ) religion.
The best places of interest to visit are Kpalime, Koutammakou, Lome, Togoville, Agbodrafo, Aneho, fazao malfakassa national park; reisgraag and Keran National park reisgraag.

Hello Sir, My name is Bharathi. Me and my husband have been reading your articles closely. We really appreciate the effort put by you to share your knowledge about vastu and it’s effects - Bharathi - USA.
I have consulted Suresh Garu during December 2014 during the process of buying a house in Texas, USA. I have occupied the house for one year now, and feel like dropping a review regarding my experience during the entire process. I am very much satisfied with the kind of service I received from him. He is very knowledgeable and I was often stunned by his detailed analysis during the course of my interaction with him. He was very much accessible over phone (perhaps more than 10 times for one house plan!) and the price is very much reasonable especially compared with the cost of the house. I noticed his burning desire to help me in making informed decisions on certain things. I have seen some people pretending to know this subject and misguiding those who come for help by saying only what we want to hear. SubhaVaastu is definitely not that one. Finally, I am strong believer of leaving certain things to experts in those subjects. I have been in US for more than 13 years and have seen people doing their own corrections (by reading website articles) trying to save few dollars. Please don’t do that. You would end up in causing more damage. I highly recommend you to engage SubhaVaastu in your next project - Satish - Dallas - TX - USA
